How can they afford the cost of new books or even used ones at bookstores? they should have visited their Goodwill Store….I’ve shopped there for years and their books are usually a dollar for even the hardbacks. Nice way to teach young daughters to be frugal in tough times. why must the Obamas flaunt their money and ability to shop at nice places in front of the whole world, which by the way include a lot of families who can’t even afford a Christmas tree. and yes, the Obamas need to feel the weight of the nation on their shoulders as long as they are in the White House….he was elected to represent the people….even the poor ones and the have nots. their girls can buy expensive things when they’re no longer in the white house!!

People fear what they don’t understand, hate what they can’t conquer……….. this is why President Obama has so many haters. they are jealous that this black man, with his black wife( both highly educated) are now the President and first Lady of the USA. this is God ordained, therefore, Satan’s followers will always through verbal stones speak negative of and envy this blessed man who became America’s first black president!

Too many Americans are used to only “their way of life.” America is bigger than any small country or narrow minded thinking. Since God created the people of this world, he can lift up any one he choses to lead a nation. God’s design and purpose is bigger than any of our small thinking. Just because you don’t agree with president Obama, doesn’t mean he isn’t doing the work of God. the bible is always talking about helping the poor. President Obama is concerned about that. Jesus healed the sick for FREE! Hmmm. President Obama wanted healthcare for all Americans whether they could afford it or not. God is also about justice and President Obama kept the mission alive to get Bin Laden…. once you hatefilled people get past yourselves, you will realize that Presint Obama has done and is trying to do good for America, but just like the people who crucified jesus, I guess you need to be forgiven because you DON”T know what you’re doing when you attack this President

He didn’t say that he said ” Satan’s followers will always through verbal stones speak negative of and envy this blessed man who became America’s first black president!”
If you understand the English language, you understand he did not say all who disagree are Satan followers, he said Satan followers speak negative and envy.

Though we are in the top 5 of spending per student, we are 31st in reading & math proficiency for graduating high school students (Graduating) at <40 proficient in reading and math….that's horrific. We spend tons, we get garbage results….it HAS TO BE FIXED SOON, our children deserve it. Teachers unions will tell you "everything is fine, we just need more money"….but you do the math…though come to think of it, if 60% plus of those reading this aren't proficient in math, well then, just take my word for it.

I crack up that we have to know what the first family was wearing, what they ate, what they bought and who they were sitting with. I am amazed we did not get a timeline of when the president had to go to the potty, and what his girls gossiped about in the stands. I am surprised we did not get a “tick tock” on when they took a sip of soda, and when someone in the family asked “is it over yet?”. Jeeeezzzz I really don’t care about all that stuff. Oh and it will be funny to see what the GOP says about the first family taking a moment to enjoy the holiday weekend. such a travesty….ha hah.

I had to laugh at ABC’s headline for this story on their front page. To refer to a bookstore visit to buy one book for the President and 7 books for his girls as a “Obama’s family bookstore binge” is really stretching the truth. Shame on you, ABC. Look up the definition of the word ‘binge’. it means “indulging in anything to excess”. 7 books for 2 children is not excessive.

Ruben (last night); “why not”? I’ve just never heard a Left wing evangelical post here before. usually it’s the Right that get’s hammered here for that.

Ruben, BTW, I often speak negatively of this man and his policies and decisions and make an occasional snide remark that shows I’m aware of what’s going on. That doesn’t make me a Satan follower. Follow?

KATHY: “how can they afford the cost of new books or even used ones at bookstores? they should have visited their Goodwill Store….I’ve shopped there for years and their books are usually a dollar for even the hardbacks…. ”
How can they afford it? the Obama’s went to school and WORKED for years, earning money. Look it up. and President Obama does currently recieve a salary (though it’s likely a pay cut from what they both earned by working in the private sector as lawyers).
I just LOVE how it’s “class warfare” if anyone criticizes the wealth of a Republican/Tea Partier/Right-Wing Corporate mogul, but when it comes to Obama and his family (or other “liberals” with money) how DARE they? See, I think it comes down, in part, to a misunderstanding of the “liberal” view of wealth; we don’t want NO-ONE to be prosperous. We want EVERYONE to be, or to at least have enough to live decently and meet their basic needs. not this unsustainable situation where an elite few control most of all income/wealth and the rest of us scramble for the crumbs.
I shop thrift stores all the time myself, even when I can afford to buy new (currently can’t afford much, being a returning university student and widow with kids with a few terms left to graduate) but even on a tight budget, it is usually possible to set priorities. For instance, how much do many, even among the poor and working class, spend on cable or junk food/fast food or cheap crap from China? usually more than enough to buy several new BOOKS in the course of a year.
“why must the Obamas flaunt their money and ability to shop at nice places in front of the whole world, which by the way include a lot of families who can’t even afford a Christmas tree. ”
As was already mentioned, consumers spending money at LOCAL, SMALL to MID-SIZED businesss is what drives our economy and creates JOBS. Check out last month’s jobs report; Over 60% of the new jobs created were at SMALL companies. the rest were at MID-SIZED ones. LARGE companies ELIMINATED 5,000 jobs. Rich investors and giant coprorations are NOT the “job creators”; WE are.
Obama is setting the example a President should, ESP. in a recession/slow economic times; shopping at a small business rather than WalMart, expressing confidence BY spending, and encouraging the reading of BOOKS by Americans.
BTW, I stopped buying dead Christmas trees decades ago. We used to go to a local nursery and buy live trees (blue spruce or doug fir or even holly), and plant them outside afterwards. Actually not much more expensive than buying a cut one.
For the past 5 years or so (not having anywhere to plant) we’ve had a Norfolk Pine (about 5 ft now…started out smaller) which lives on the balcony most of the year and which we move inside, put on a pedestal, and decorate for the holidays. Costs NADA. and no concern about drying out/fire hazzard/disposal (we often leave it inside and lit until spring, just for the lovely light during the long, grey winter:)
Sure, I’m not supporting the local Christmas tree industry (most such trees are grown up here, in the Pacific NW) but I can use the extra funds to support my local independent BOOKSTORE or other small business.

For the past 36 months, Americans have hoped for the best. but it hasn’t turned out that way. in fact, some argue that Mr. Obama actually made the economy worse – the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said last week that his 2009 stimulus package may have sustained as few as 700,000 jobs at its peak and that over the long run it will be a net drag on the economy.
But then, this. the president, traveling the country purportedly to look for votes in 2012, decided to lecture the American people on their shortcomings: fat, lazy, stupid. and now, he’s channeling – of all people – Jimmy Carter.

Obama, Dodd & Frank have rules in place to help kill small business (Accredited Investor Qualifications). Buying some books to “show support” is a joke (much like the SBA, or any gov support for small business). no, I won’t be voting for him again. Think this is “whining?” Look in to it…

Contrary to what you alleged, the Congressional Budget Office’s report (November 2011) had predominantly positive things to say about the impart of the stimulus package.

Obama’s own Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) estimated the “stimulus” cost taxpayers anywhere between $185,000 and $278,000 per job.
If the stimulus was so successful, why don’t YOU have a job?

“….estimated the “stimulus” cost taxpayers anywhere between $185,000 and $278,000 per job”
Is that really the best you can do?……just spam an already thoroughly debunked statement fabricated by the Weekly Standard? the stimulus paid for a great deal more than just jobs. it paid for all kinds of programs at state levels and helped balance state budgets…..just ask Republican governors like Rick Perry who spend $billions from it.

What part of “Obama’s own Council of Economic Advisors (CEA)” don’t you understand? Those figures come from Obama’s own HANDPICKED ECONOMISTS.
Even worse, our civilian labor force is nearly 2 MILLION people SMALLER now than it was when Obama became President while our population grew by over 7 MILLION people during that same period.
Civilian Labor Force Level (Jan 2009): 142,201,000Civilian Labor Force Level (Oct 2011): 140,302,000
Net change: -1,899,000
Estimated U.S. Population (Jan 1, 2009): 305,529,237Estimated U.S. Population (Nov 4, 2011): 312,555,892
Net change: +7,026,655
These are GOVERNMENT FIGURES.
The “stimulus” was an EPIC FAILURE. if it had succeeded, it would be obvious to everyone and Obama’s sycophants wouldn’t have to constantly shill for him.

“Those figures come from Obama’s own HANDPICKED ECONOMISTS”
They do not. the Council never published an estimate of how many dollars per job. if they did it would be easy for you to find an actual quote from them since all of their official statements are a matter of public record……but you will fail because the statement is a right-wing lie fabricated by taking the estimated total cost of the stimulus and dividing by the estimates for job creation while totally ignoring all of the other expenses. Now I’m not claiming that people who parrot the baloney made up at the Weekly Stand are too dumb to know their numbers are not the CEA’s, just dishonest.

Chuck you’re a lightweight thinker. Using January 2009 as a begin date to blame lost jobs on Obama is just plain stupid.
Bush handed Obama a country in free-fall economic collapse. Close to a million jobs being lost every month by the time Obama was inaugurated. you expected him to stop this on a dime? Are you that dense, or just being dishonest? the momentum from the Bush collapse was just peaking as Obama took office and it continued for almost 6 months. it then started to reverse as Obama’s policies began to have effect.

It’s been three years. Our national debt is $15 trillion. Poverty has accelerated to record levels under Obama. Our civilian labor force is still 2 million people smaller than it was in January 2009. and you still don’t have a job, Tierra.
